Opening of Kitsch: Craft So Bad That It’s Good

Kitsch: Craft So Bad That It’s Good is a group exhibition that subverts the rules around good taste, and crosses the line, making you laugh and cringe all at once! The resulting exhibition is exciting, curious, challenging, eccentric and hilarious!

I am so proud these three pieces made it into the show. Thank you Alberta Craft Council for having me. Image: Maureen Hossack

I had a fabulous time visiting the Alberta Craft Council with my mom last weekend for their first opening since the pandemic. It had a wonderful turnout. I got to see friends I hadn’t seen in twenty years, meet new friends, and talk all things Kitsch. Below is a short gallery of images taken at the opening.

These pieces have been waiting for their time to shine. I am so happy to see them in a gallery place. About the work:

OBJECTS I ALREADY HAVE ON HAND: SHADOW BOXES

I found an amazing shadow box circle made from plexi glass, wood, and found objects in 2015 at a garage sale in Banff. I hung it in my studio and was inspired of the sheer kitschiness of it. I starred at it for hours trying to figure out how to create this feeling of kitsch and shadow play while incorporating my love for throwing on the wheel. Both cringeworthy and a howdunnit, these circular shadow wall hangings are created in the spirit of kitsch and have been waiting for years to show themselves. They are part of a larger series that explored human connections to land.

I am thankful for my mom driving out with me, and for the Banff community for making sure my daughter was well cared for as I had a late return. I wrote more about the exhibition here.

A must watch!
